What are the most common sand defects in sand casting and how do you avoid them?

Here are two common sand casting defects we see most frequently:

  1. Fallout for stickers – How to avoid it? Avoiding overly deep pockets can help avoid fallout for stickers.
  2. Creating a large isolated boss – How to avoid it? Try to consider feed paths when designing parts so you don’t create a large isolated boss that is impossible to feed resulting in the feature having shrink porosity.

What are the Causes?

Defects occur mainly when molten fluid is in the solidification process. This happens when temperature is uneven or uncontrolled.

It stems mostly from improper pouring and technical work:

  1. Faulty gating and riser system
  2. The pouring temperature is too high
  3. Mold wall shift due to high metal pressure
  4. Chills are not placed properly
  5. Sudden change in the thickness of sections

Having a sand casting expert you can work with during the design process can help you avoid these common defects from the start. To learn more about the sand casting process reach out to our team today.
